Disciplined Agile is fast growing as a recognizable certification, and PMI certainly felt that it was worth an investment by bringing this into their portfolio of services and certifications. The primary value of Disciplined Agile is that it addresses two key areas organizations typically struggle with in their Agile implementation – trying to apply one Agile set of practices to all situations and the misalignment that occurs between management and the teams. Disciplined Agile brings together management and team objectives through a decision framework that helps the organization choose the right set of practices for what they are trying to accomplish, within six potential lifecycles.
Yes, there are a growing number of companies that are fully implemented with Disciplined Agile, or have started their implementations. Most importantly, Disciplined Agile certifications and training are starting to show up on job postings, so those organizations are desiring to leverage the value of Disciplined Agile in their organizations.
- The Disciplined Agile Scrum Master (DASM®) course is a two-day entry level course for aspiring Agile leaders. There is no experience requirement for this course and covers key subjects such as an introduction to Lean and Agile concepts, orientation on the Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) system and also leadership qualities in an Agile team.
- The Disciplined Agile Senior Scrum Master (DASSM®) course is targeted for those that have already been leading in Agile teams. There is a prerequisite that you have two years’ Agile leadership experience, such as Scrum Master, Product Owner, Team Lead, Architect, or even as a Project Manager where some or all of the project teams are delivering with Agile practices. The course takes a deep dive into more advanced leadership characteristics for teams, the DAD toolkit and how to guide the team through the selection of the appropriate process options. There is a heavy focus on practically applying the toolkit with built-in hands-on scenarios you will work through with your classmates. You will be prepared to start implementing the DAD toolkit immediately on completing this course, as well as to gain your certification!
- In the near future, PMI® will be expanding the Disciplined Agile certification courses to include the next two certifications in the journey, the Certified Disciplined Agile Coach and the Disciplined Agile Value Stream Consultant opportunities. We are looking forward to being able to bring these courses to you in the future as we grow with you in delivering DAD capabilities!
The PMI-ACP® certification is more broadly applied than the Disciplined Agile training and certifications. For the PMI-ACP® the focus is more on the various types of Agile approaches and prepares you to understand all the Agile roles across those different delivery frameworks. The exam is also much more involved, and requires 120 questions in three hours, whereas the Disciplined Agile exam is 50 questions completed in one hour. In the Disciplined Agile certification tree the focus is on the knowledge needed to implement and run teams and organizations with the Disciplined Agile toolkit specifically.
In the Disciplined Agile certification path there are several options based on your experience. If you are new to Agile and Lean concepts the DASM® course is right for you. If you have the prerequisite two years’ experience leading Agile efforts we highly recommend you choose the DASSM® course so you can stand out from the crowd!
